Bold As A Lion

“The righteous are as bold as a lion” — Proverbs 28:1

Jesus is likened to a lion (Rev. 5:5). A lion is bold and backs down from nothing. When you spend time with Jesus, His boldness will rub off on you (Acts 4:12-13).

Peter Cartwright was a rugged and fearless circuit-riding preacher in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. When he arrived at a new town to preach, he’d ride up a nearby mountain to look over the town.  He would turn to his associate and say, “I smell hell!”

In October, 1818 Cartwright was invited to preach at a conference in Tennessee.   The church was full to overflowing—Standing room only. After the song service, Cartwright got up to preach. He announced his text—“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Just then General Andrew Jackson entered the crowded church. With no place to sit, Jackson stood in the aisle and leaned on a post to listen.

One of the city’s more refined pastors pulled Cartwright’s coat tail and whispered, “General Jackson is here!” Cartwright writes in his autobiography what happened next:

“I felt a flash of indignation run over me like an electric shock, and facing about to my congregation, and purposely speaking out audibly, I said, ‘Who is General Jackson? If he don’t get his soul converted, God will damn him as quick as he would a Guinea negro!’”

That kind of talk won’t get you invited to speak to the local Ladies Aid Society. But nobody laughed at Cartwright, like the world laughs at Christians today. Maybe we should be a little more bold as we speak up for Christ!

TODAY, September 9

TODAY, September 9

This is the day which the LORD hath made… —Psalm 118:24

Today is a special day. What is so special about September 9?  Perhaps today is special because it is your birthday or anniversary.  September 9, 1785 is the birthday of Peter Cartwright, one of America’s greatest circuit riding preachers. [Read about him at this LINK.]  Today in 1776, Congress renamed the union the “United States of America.” Or, today, in 1850, California became the 31st state.  September 9 is also special for Sandy Koufax when in 1965 he pitched a perfect game against the Chicago Cubs.

But what if none of these events or facts seem to make your September 9 special? Then consider the following:

Today is another day you have to praise the Lord. Psalm 118:24 says, “This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”

Today God provides you a fresh batch of His mercies. Jeremiah wrote, “The Lord’s mercies…are new every morning” (Lam. 3:22-23).

Today is another opportunity to trust God to meet your needs. “Give us this day our daily bread” (Mt. 6:11).

Today God will renew your inner man. “Though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day” (2 Cor. 4:16).

Today is another day you are privileged to open and study His Word like those believers at Berea who “searched the Scriptures daily” (Acts 17:11).

Today is the day of salvation if you are unsaved. “Behold now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor. 6:2). Don’t put it off.

Thank God for today! With the Lord, today, and every day, is special.  Use it for His glory!

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom” (Ps. 90:12).
