Christian Heroes

“In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord.” —Isaiah 6:1

The prophet Isaiah was staking his hopes for revival upon King Uzziah. When Uzziah died he thought everything would crumble into disaster. As long as Uzziah lived Isaiah forgot the Lord. He depended on the earthly, he overlooked the heavenly.

When the earthly king was removed, the eternal King could be revealed. When his hero was gone, Isaiah found the Lord. What was an apparent calamity, was God’s means of refocusing Isaiah’s attention back on the Lord. While a storm may bring loss, it also clears the air. God sends the winds of sorrow to blow away the clouds so we can see Him.

Christians have their heroes. Good men. But don’t make the mistake of placing your hopes in some man—some preacher or evangelist—as the answer to the churches problems. Revival is not in a man, or a program, but comes from God alone.
