Don’t Judge A Book By It’s Cover

Posted By on January 14, 2011

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.” —Romans 8:28

“Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.” The same is true when discerning the events of life. Don’t judge a circumstance by it’s cover. On the surface, something may appear bad, but actually end up being a blessing. When you face some circumstance in life is contrary to your liking, can you really label it as being “bad” while we are walking with God?

For instance, your car breaks down right before you are to take a family road trip. But when you take the car to the shop, the mechanic says, “Good thing you didn’t take this out on the road. It could have caught fire.” Is that bad because of the inconvenience, or good because of God’s protection?

It is often hard to see how God is working. His mysteries don’t always reveal their secrets to us, and our journey is often redirected by uncontrollable detours. Perhaps God is showing us a better route.

Joseph’s brothers hated him and sold him as a slave. What appeared to be “bad” on the surface turned out to be a good thing. After Joseph and his brothers were reconciled and Joseph told them, Ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as is this day, to save much people alive” (Gen. 50:20).

To benefit from what may seem bad at first, we must recognize and trust God’s love and purpose. Psalms 84:11— For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.
