Let’s Stick Together
That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have he same care one for another. —1 Corinthians 12:25
The Lord likens the church to a human body made up of many cells. “For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ… Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular” (1 Cor. 12:12, 27).
Each member is important to every other member. The foot needs the hand; the ear needs the eye (1 Cor. 12:15-21). We are to function together and “have the same care one for another.” When one member suffers, the rest of the members suffer with it (1 Cor. 12: 26).
This truth has recently been observed in a new scientific study conducted at the University of Texas. In the body, healthy cells typically need to maintain contact with other cells. If they float free, they die. I’ve seen this happen in the lives of church members who stray from the fellowship of other members in the church. It isn’t long until their spiritual life is comatose.
Another interest finding in this study is that cancer cells have the ability to separate from healthy cells and not die, but form tumors.
The bottom line of this study is “stress and cancer are related.” Stress hormones activate a protein that helps cancer cells survive unattached. Researchers discovered that when stress levels were increased in cancer patients, the cancer cells increased faster. (The Week magazine, April 30, 2010, p. 21).
How we need to stick together, especially during the stressful times in our lives. Don’t allow stress to separate you from the fellowship of your caring church members who help to relieve the stress in your life. Don’t allow stress to turn you into a cancer cell.
